Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What’s the best way to attach a trash can to one of your street benches?

When it comes to keeping public or private outdoor spaces clean, attaching a trash can directly to a street bench is a smart and neighborly move. It encourages people to toss their trash without having to wander off, but you want the attachment to be secure, unobtrusive, and easy to service. So, what’s the best way to do it? After a lot of hands-on testing and talking to park maintenance crews, here’s what works.

The single best method is using a heavy-duty metal mounting bracket with a quick-release mechanism. You bolt the bracket directly to the underside or back rail of the bench (use stainless steel bolts to avoid rust), and the trash can slides into place and locks. This means the can is stable when someone kicks it or the wind blows, but a cleaner can unlock and lift the can out in seconds for emptying. Avoid welding unless you own the bench, because once welded, you can’t move or replace the bracket easily.

For a no-drill solution, heavy-duty zip ties can work on wooden or slatted benches. Wrap three or four industrial-grade, UV-resistant zip ties around the bench leg or crossbar and through the handles or rim of the can. It’s not as pretty, but it’s fast, cheap, and reversible—great for temporary setups.

If you want something more polished, look for purpose-built “bench mate” brackets sold by outdoor furniture suppliers. These are made to match standard bench widths and come with pre-drilled holes and all hardware. You just screw them on, and the can rests snugly against the bench’s side, never tipping over.

Pro tip: always leave a one-inch gap between the top of the can and the bench seat. This lets you open the lid easily without scraping the wood. And use powder-coated or galvanized brackets—plain steel will bleed rust stains onto your bench within a season.

So, whichever path you choose, the best attachment is strong, removable for cleaning, and doesn’t make the bench uncomfortable to sit on. A well-attached trash can might be the most underappreciated upgrade your street bench ever gets.
