Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do your park benches handle extreme cold temperatures without becoming brittle?

Great question! When it comes to extreme cold, the key is in the materials and engineering we use. Our park benches are designed specifically to avoid the brittleness issue that affects many standard outdoor benches during harsh winters. Here’s a breakdown of how we achieve this.

First, we carefully select materials that naturally resist cold-weather brittleness. For metal components, we use high-grade, cold-rolled steel or aluminum alloys that maintain their structural integrity even at sub-zero temperatures. Unlike cheaper metals that can become brittle at -20°F or lower, these alloys retain their flexibility. For wooden slats, we choose hardwoods like ipe or thermally modified ash that are treated to prevent micro-cracking. These woods have a low moisture content, which reduces internal stress when temperatures drop.

Second, our manufacturing process includes a deep cryogenic treatment for steel parts. This involves slowly cooling the metal to around -300°F and then gradually warming it back. This process relieves internal stresses and eliminates weak points, making the metal significantly less prone to brittle fracture. For plastic or composite components, we use reinforced polymers with a high impact resistance rating, specifically formulated to stay flexible in cold weather without becoming brittle.

Third, we apply specialized coatings and sealants. A cold-weather-tolerant powder coating protects metal from moisture and oxidation, which are major contributors to brittleness over time. Wood components get a penetrating oil with UV inhibitors that also seals out water and prevents freeze-thaw cycle damage, which can cause sudden brittleness.

Finally, our benches are tested in extreme conditions. We simulate -40°F environments in our labs and field-test in northern climates like Canada and Scandinavia. During these tests, we check for sudden breakage, stress fractures, and changes in material flexibility. Our benches perform reliably down to -50°F, and we’ve never had a brittleness failure in over a decade of severe winter use.

In short, it’s not just one trick but a combination of right material selection, advanced treatment processes, and rigorous testing that ensures our benches stay safe, sturdy, and non-brittle even during the coldest winters. If you’re planning for a location that experiences extreme cold, we’re happy to recommend specific models suited for your climate conditions.
