Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I live in a flood zone—are there urban benches that float away less easily, or should I bolt everything down?

Living in a flood zone comes with its own set of worries, and yes, your urban bench is one of them. I’ve asked myself the same question: “Are there benches that float away less easily, or should I bolt everything down?” The short answer is both—depending on what you want.

First, know this: most lightweight, portable benches (think plastic or thin metal) will float or shift in even moderate floodwaters. Water is powerful, and buoyancy is real. If you own a standard residential bench, especially one with hollow legs or plastic slats, bolting it down is your safest bet. Concrete anchors or ground stakes can keep it in place, but you’ll still want to remove cushions or any loose parts before a storm.

However, there are urban benches designed with flood resilience in mind. These are often made from heavy concrete or solid steel, with a low center of gravity and wide bases. Some cities even use “flood-friendly” benches that are permeable or have drainage holes to reduce water resistance. The key is weight and structure—look for benches that weigh over 200 pounds or have built-in anchoring systems. Materials like recycled plastic lumber (which is dense and water-resistant) combined with a steel frame also perform well.

If you’re in a high-risk flood zone and want peace of mind, I’d recommend a heavy-duty concrete bench with a textured surface (to prevent slipping) and bolting it into a concrete slab. For lighter benches, store them indoors during flood season or at least strap them down. Don’t forget that floodwaters can carry debris, so even a heavish bench might tip over if struck by a floating log.

In short: don’t assume your bench is safe just because it’s heavy. Bolt down anything under 150 pounds, and for heavier models, check the manufacturer’s flood rating. When in doubt, anchor it. Your bench—and your neighbors’ safety—will thank you.
