Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

We’re planning a row of street benches along a promenade—should I space them 6 feet apart or 10 feet apart for good flow?

When planning a row of street benches along a promenade, the spacing between each bench directly affects how people move, stop, and linger. The short answer? For good pedestrian flow, I’d lean toward 10 feet apart rather than 6 feet—but let’s unpack why.

At 6 feet apart, benches feel cozy and encourage clusters of people, which can be great for social spots near cafes or bus stops. However, on a busy promenade, that tight spacing creates bottlenecks. Walkers, joggers, and parents with strollers have to weave between the benches and seated people’s legs, slowing down traffic. You also risk making the path feel “choppy” rather than open.

At 10 feet apart, you give everyone room. A typical person sitting with legs extended takes up about 2–3 feet from the bench front. With 10 feet of bench-to-bench gap, you leave 7–8 feet of clear walkway—enough for two people to pass side-by-side comfortably. This spacing also allows benches to be paired with small waste bins or planters without cramping the path.

That said, consider your promenade’s purpose. If it’s a leisurely “stroll and sit” zone with wide pavement (say, over 15 feet wide), 6 feet can work because people can easily step around. But for a standard 8–10 foot wide promenade? Go with 10 feet. You’ll keep the flow smooth for cyclists, runners, AND the folks who just want to sit and watch the world go by.

Final tip: Add one or two “clusters” of benches at 6-foot intervals near viewpoints or shade spots, then space the rest 10 feet apart. That way, you get the best of both worlds—social buzz where it’s wanted, and clear flow everywhere else.
