Great question—and one that a lot of people overlook until they’ve already scratched their deck or patio. Here’s the honest answer:
Most standard outdoor benches do NOT come with a built-in lifter or handle on the bottom. They’re designed to sit and look nice, not to be dragged around. However, there are some exceptions and workarounds that might solve your problem.
First, if you’re looking at a specific product online, check the "Features" section carefully. Some high-end or heavy-duty commercial-grade benches include one or two metal handles integrated into the bottom frame. These are usually hidden when the bench is sitting but fold down or reachable when you tilt the bench back.
Second, many benches—especially those with wooden slats or metal frames—have a bar or crosspiece near the bottom. If that bar is exposed and strong enough, you can technically grab it to lift and drag. But here’s the catch: dragging directly along that bar can still scratch your floor if the bar is flat or uncoated. You’ll need to lift it slightly, not just drag.
Third, some newer models do include soft rubber bumpers or a plastic bottom plate that lifts the bench off the ground by about a quarter inch. These plates double as a dragging skid plate, allowing you to slide the bench a few feet without scratching. They’re not full handles, but they’re definitely useful.
Finally, if your bench doesn’t have any of these, consider adding your own. You can buy adhesive rubber cups, slide-on furniture movers, or even install small metal handles yourself. Alternatively, use a furniture dolly or a piece of old carpet under the legs to drag it safely.
So, to directly answer: most outdoor benches don’t come with a lifter or handle for dragging without scratching. But a few premium brands do offer them, or you can easily retrofit your bench to protect your surfaces. Always check the product specs or ask the seller for close-up photos of the bottom. That’s the best way to be sure.
