Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Are there park benches with backrests high enough to support taller people’s necks?

As a tall person, you’ve probably sat on a park bench and felt that familiar discomfort: the backrest stops somewhere around your mid-back, leaving your head and neck unsupported. It’s a common frustration. So, are there park benches with backrests high enough to actually support a taller person’s neck? The short answer is yes, but they are not as common as you might hope. Most standard park benches have backrests that are only about 16 to 18 inches high from the seat, which is designed for an average person around 5’8” to 5’10”. For someone who is 6’2” or taller, that leaves a lot of unsupported spine and head.

The good news is that manufacturers are beginning to recognize this need. You can find benches with “high backs” or “ergonomic backs” that extend to 24, 28, or even 32 inches above the seat. A height of around 28 to 30 inches is generally enough to support the average tall person’s upper back and neck (especially the cervical spine). Some specialty benches, often found in ergonomic office or premium outdoor furniture lines, also feature a slight recline or a contoured lumbar and head rest section.

To find these better-suited benches, you often have to look beyond standard city park furniture. Try searching for “tall person park benches,” “high back outdoor benches,” or “extra tall backrest seating.” Also, keep an eye out for benches made by brands focused on ergonomics, like “Keystone Ridge Designs” for commercial parks, or “Polywood” for residential and commercial settings—some of their models have significantly taller backrests. However, there’s a key nuance: even a tall backrest isn’t perfect if you’re very tall (over 6’5”). You may need a bench with a longer seat depth as well, because a short seat forces you to lean forward, taking your neck away from the backrest.

In summary, yes, park benches with neck-supporting backrests for taller people do exist. When shopping or sitting, look for a backrest height measurement of at least 28 inches. Try it before you buy, if possible. And if you’re a city planner or a property manager, consider investing in these more inclusive designs—they make public spaces much more comfortable for everyone.
