Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Does that street bench have hidden bolts to discourage theft?

So, you’re looking at a street bench and wondering if there are hidden bolts underneath to keep it from walking away? The short answer is: often, yes—but it depends on where the bench is and how much of a target it is.

Public benches are actually prime targets for theft, especially in urban areas where scrap metal prices can make a sturdy cast-iron or aluminum bench worth a few bucks. To combat this, manufacturers and city planners have gotten clever. Many modern street benches use what are called "tamper-proof" or "security" fasteners. These aren’t your standard hex bolts; they often require specialized tools—like a star-shaped Torx bit with a center pin, or a proprietary socket that you can’t buy at a hardware store. The idea is that a thief with a simple wrench or screwdriver won’t be able to remove the bolts without significant effort.

But are they *hidden*? Not always. Sometimes the bolts are designed to be flush with the surface, so they’re not obvious to a casual passerby. In other cases, the bolts are recessed into the bench frame, covered by a plastic or metal cap that snaps into place. If you look closely, you might see a small, circular plug on the side of the bench—that’s often covering the bolt head. Some high-end benches even use bolts that are welded or pinned in place after installation, making them effectively permanent.

However, it’s not just about bolts. Many street benches are bolted directly into concrete footings that are buried deep underground. In that scenario, even if you could remove the bolts, the bench legs are anchored in a 50-pound block of concrete. That’s a deterrent in itself. And for benches in high-traffic areas like parks or transit stations, the entire structure might be welded to a metal plate that’s bolted into the ground with multiple layers of security.

So, next time you sit down, you can rest easy knowing that there’s probably a combination of hidden bolts, specialty fasteners, and heavy concrete working together to keep that bench exactly where it is. Unless, of course, someone brings a power drill and a concrete saw—but that’s a whole different level of commitment.
