Another excellent, and often more affordable, choice is Shorea (sometimes sold as Balau or Bangkirai). This Southeast Asian hardwood is incredibly dense and strong, offering remarkable resistance to decay and wear. It performs similarly to teak but typically requires an initial application of sealant to protect its color.
For the ultimate in hardness and weather resistance, look to Ipe (pronounced "ee-pay"). This Brazilian hardwood is so dense that it sinks in water and is famously resistant to rot, mold, and fire. An Ipe wood bench is virtually indestructible and can last a lifetime, though its hardness does make it more challenging to work with.
