Living near the ocean is a dream—until you notice those orange-brown spots creeping across your favorite metal bench. The salt air and moisture are relentless, but don’t worry. Start with the right metal. If you’re buying new, go for marine-grade aluminum or 316 stainless steel. These materials handle salt spray and humidity far better than regular steel or iron. Aluminum naturally forms a protective oxide layer, while 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which fights corrosion like a champ.
But what if you already have a bench? No problem. You can still protect it. Clean the surface thoroughly with a mild soap and water, then rinse off all salt residue. Let it dry completely. Next, apply a high-quality rust-inhibiting primer followed by a marine-grade paint or urethane enamel. These coatings act like a shield against the salty mist.
The key is re-coating. Every six months or so, check for chips or scratches. Touch them up immediately—even a tiny crack can let moisture creep in and start rusting. I also recommend a protective wax layer. A good carnauba wax or marine wax added twice a year gives an extra barrier and makes the bench shine.
