Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I’ve noticed some outdoor benches have gaps that catch trash—do your designs avoid that?

You’re absolutely right to notice that. Many outdoor benches—especially those with wide horizontal or vertical gaps between slats—can trap wrappers, leaves, cigarette butts, and plastic bottles. It’s a common frustration for parks, bus stops, and sidewalk seating. That’s exactly why we’ve thought through our designs to minimize or eliminate that issue.

Our benches use two key strategies:

1. Solid or minimalist seat surfaces. Instead of multiple thin slats that create ready-made trash pockets, we use wider single-piece seat panels or tightly spaced slats with no deep gaps. This reduces the physical space where debris can lodge.

2. Angled or perforated drainage slots rather than catch-all gaps. If we include gaps for water runoff, we cut them as narrow slits (under 5mm) or tapered channels that push debris downward and through, not into a corner. The seat itself is slightly sloped so wind and rain naturally sweep litter off the edge.

We also test our benches with “trash resistance” as a criterion: we drop a coffee lid, a candy wrapper, and a receipt onto the seat. If any of them stays stuck after a light breeze or a shake, we redesign the gap pattern. So far, our current bench lines pass that test—they may briefly hold a paper if it lands wet, but once dry, it slides off or blows away within minutes.

To be fully honest: no outdoor bench can be 100% trash-proof if someone deliberately stuffs trash into a crevice. But we’ve made sure that casual dropping, wind, and rain will not let litter accumulate. Maintenance crews also appreciate that they can hose down our benches in one pass instead of picking piece by piece out of gaps.

If you’re selecting benches for a high-traffic area, I’d also recommend choosing powder-coated metal or solid HDPE (recycled plastic) surfaces, which discourage trash sticking and are easy to wipe clean. Let me know if you’d like a comparison of our specific models—I can match them to your site’s typical litter problems.
