If you’ve noticed a cracked or snapped slat on your park bench, don’t worry — fixing it is a straightforward DIY job. Here’s how I’d do it step by step.
1. Assess the damage
First, check whether the slat is simply cracked or completely broken. If it’s just a hairline crack, you might be able to glue and clamp it. For a broken or missing piece, replacement is best.
2. Remove the broken slat
Use a drill or screwdriver to remove any screws or bolts holding the damaged slat in place. If the wood is rotten or the screws are rusted, you may need a pry bar to gently lift the slat off the bench frame.
3. Measure and cut a new slat
Take measurements of the old slat — length, width, and thickness. Use a saw (hand saw or circular saw) to cut a piece of pressure-treated wood (or cedar, teak, or other outdoor-rated lumber) to the exact same size. Sand the edges to avoid splinters.
4. Pre-drill and attach
Hold the new slat in place on the bench frame. Mark where the screw holes should go. Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting. Then attach the slat using outdoor-grade screws (stainless steel or coated). Tighten firmly but don’t overtighten.
5. Finish and weatherproof
If the bench is painted or stained, apply a matching coat to the new slat. For unfinished wood, brush on an outdoor wood sealant or spar varnish to protect against rain and sun. Let it dry fully before using the bench.
6. Final check
Test the slat by pressing down on it — it should feel solid and flush with the other slats. If it rocks, add an extra screw. Enjoy your fully restored park bench!
