If you own a street bench—whether it’s made of concrete, wood, or metal—you’ve probably noticed that freezing temperatures can be brutal on it. Cracks don’t just ruin the look; they weaken the structure and can make sitting unsafe. The good news? With a few smart steps, you can keep your bench solid through the harshest winters. Here’s what actually works.
First, choose the right material from the start. Concrete benches are heavy and durable, but they’re prone to cracking if the concrete mix isn’t air-entrained. Air-entrained concrete has tiny bubbles that give water room to expand when it freezes, instead of forcing the material apart. If your bench is already concrete, check if it was made with freeze-thaw resistant mix. If not, you’ll need to seal it.
Sealing is the single most effective protection. Use a high-quality penetrating concrete sealer (silane or siloxane based) before winter hits. Apply it when the temperature is above 50°F and the bench is dry. The sealer soaks into the pores and repels moisture, stopping water from getting inside and freezing. Reapply every 1–2 years. For wood benches, use a marine-grade varnish or oil-based stain that repels water. For metal, a rust-proofing paint with anti-corrosion properties works best.
Next, address drainage. Water pooling on the seat or around the base is a recipe for cracks. Tilt the bench slightly (1–2 degrees) so water runs off instead of collecting. If the bench is set into the ground, make sure there’s gravel beneath for drainage—standing water under the base can freeze and push upward, cracking the legs or supports.
During winter, don’t let snow and ice sit on the bench. Gently brush off snow with a plastic shovel or broom (metal can scratch and create entry points for moisture). Avoid using chemical deicers like rock salt—they can eat into concrete and metal. Instead, use sand or calcium magnesium acetate if you need traction.
Finally, watch for existing hairline cracks. Before winter, fill any tiny cracks with a flexible epoxy or polyurethane crack filler. This stops water from sneaking in and expanding when it freezes. For concrete, you can also apply a liquid asphalt or rubberized coating that stays flexible in cold weather.
One more pro tip: If the bench is bolted to a foundation, check the bolts. Loose bolts allow the bench to rock, which creates stress points that crack under freeze-thaw cycles. Tighten them, and add rubber washers to absorb movement.
