Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What’s the widest outdoor bench you sell—I want to be able to lie down on it?

Honestly, I love this question—it’s the kind of thinking that turns a regular backyard into a personal retreat. You don’t want a bench just for sitting; you want one you can fully stretch out on, close your eyes, and pretend you’re somewhere coastal with nothing to do until dinner.

The widest outdoor bench we currently sell is the Cascade Deep-Rest Lounger. It’s not just a bench with a slightly broader seat—this one was built specifically for sprawling. The total depth is 48 inches front to back. That’s four full feet of flat, uninterrupted surface. For comparison, a standard outdoor bench tends to be around 18 to 24 inches deep, which is fine for perching with a coffee but hopeless for a nap. The Cascade gives you double that, which means most people can lie down fully without dangling feet or shoulder blades hanging off the edge.

What makes it work is how stable and intentional it feels. The frame is thick-gauge teak, so there’s zero wobble when you shift position, and the wide armrests double as a little side table for your book or sunglasses. We kept the back low and gently sloped—just enough to catch your head if you prop a cushion there, but not so high that it eats into the lying-down space. If you want to lie flat, you can simply slide a thin roll-up mat on it and call it a day. If you prefer a slightly reclined lounge vibe, the integrated 15-degree angle across the whole seat panel cradles you without feeling like you’re sliding off.

A few people have asked if it’s technically still a bench, and I get the confusion—isn’t it more of a daybed? Honestly, it lives right in between. It has the clean, linear silhouette of a bench and the depth of a nice poolside lounger. That hybrid design means it fits beautifully against a garden wall, on a wide porch, or even in the middle of a patio as a statement piece you can actually use. We’ve had customers place two across from each other with a fire pit in between, and if you lie diagonally, you can watch the flames with your legs fully supported. It really does change the way you hang out outdoors.

Width-wise, the same depth applies along the full length, which is a 72-inch bench seat—so there’s enough room for two people to lie side by side if they’re friendly, or one person to shift from back to side to starfish without disturbing anyone. The weight capacity is substantial too; the cross-bracing underneath is rated for over 800 pounds static load, so even with multiple people or a thick mattress topper added, it stays rock-solid.

If you need something even wider, we do have a custom option we occasionally build for clients in desert locations—the Plateau Slab Bench, which goes to 54 inches deep and is more of a floating platform than a conventional bench. It’s made to order, takes about nine weeks, and comes in white oak or thermally modified ash. But honestly, for most people the 48-inch Cascade already feels like a generous twin-size situation once you add outdoor pillows. Lying on it feels like claiming the world’s most civilized nap spot.

The best way to decide is to measure your own wing span or try lying down on a bed with a tape measure—48 inches gives an average adult a soft margin from head to heel without the “cliff edge” feeling. If you’re on the taller side (over six-foot-two), pairing it with a cushioned headrest that fills the slight backrest angle makes all the difference, and we can point you toward ones that fit perfectly.

So yes, you can absolutely lie down on it. That’s exactly what it’s for. A lot of benches keep you upright and social; this one gives you permission to go horizontal, right in the open air.
