Do your park benches have a non-slip surface when they get wet?

Oh, I love this question because it’s one of those things you don’t think about until you’ve watched someone nearly do the splits on a damp bench. Short answer: yes, absolutely. We’ve spent way too many drizzly mornings testing, slipping (intentionally), and fixing exactly this to leave it to chance. But let me walk you through the “how” because it’s not just a magical spray-on coating that washes off in a week.

The real secret sits in the wood itself and the profile we mill into every slat. All our benches use thermally modified hardwood — usually ash or spruce that’s been cooked at over 200°C in an oxygen-free kiln. This process doesn’t just make the wood incredibly rot-resistant; it changes the cellular structure so the surface stays naturally grippy even when water sits on it. Instead of that terrifying glassy film you get on painted metal or cheap varnished pine, you’re left with a micro-texture that feels almost like very fine velvet. Water beads up slightly but your shoe or hand still finds traction immediately. The thermal modification also means the wood swells and shrinks far less than untreated timber, so the surface stays consistently flat and doesn’t cup into little rainwater puddles that freeze into ice rinks come winter.

The second piece of the puzzle is the slat profile. If you run your fingers over one of our bench seats, you’ll feel a gentle radius on the edges and a very subtle crown across the width — we call it a rainwater-dispersing contour. It’s not enough to feel like you’re perched on a barrel, but just enough that water doesn’t pool. Combine that with 8–10mm gaps between each slat, and you get constant drainage and air movement. On a rainy Tuesday, the water slips straight through, and what remains is a thin film that the wood’s surface texture can still grip through. We even tested this with a guy in wet neoprene waders sliding across a soaked bench at a 30-degree incline. Nerdy, yes. But he stayed put, and so will your picnic lunch.

Now, if you’re comparing us with those old-school iron-and-wood benches that become banana-peel slick at the first sign of drizzle: the difference is night and day. Cast iron ends up with a pollish that moisture clings to, and cheap pine just absorbs water and grows slimy algae unless you’re re-oiling it every season. With our material and design, algae and moss don’t get a foothold easily because the surface dries so fast. That said, in really deep shade or persistently damp climates, a quick seasonal brush with warm soapy water keeps the micro-grooves clear and the grip consistent. No weird chemicals, no annual sanding.

We’re also a little proud of what it feels like to sit down on a bench just after a summer shower. There’s that warm wood smell that rises up, and your shorts don’t come away with a soaked-through patch. The surface cools you without that shock of cold wetness. On bare arms or legs, it’s pleasant rather than startling. One customer called it “the Goldilocks of wet benches,” which we’ve sort of stolen as an internal slogan now.

So if you’re worried about public safety, liability, or just your own dignity while reaching for a coffee cup on a misty morning, our benches are built with that exact scenario in mind.
