Do your street benches have any sharp edges that could be a safety hazard for kids?

Honestly, I get this question a lot from parents and town council members, and I love answering it because it shows you care about the little details. The short answer is: no, our street benches don’t have sharp edges that could be a safety hazard for kids. I’ll break down exactly why, because “rounded edges” can mean different things depending on who you ask.

When I say our benches are kid-safe, I’m talking about a real design philosophy, not just a quick sanding job. Every edge a child might bump into, grab, or trip over has been intentionally rounded. The armrests curve softly into the backrest, and the ends of the wooden slats or metal profiles are finished with a radius you can actually feel. We use what’s called a bullnose or chamfered edge profile on all exposed corners. If you run your hand along the side of the seat, there’s no 90-degree corner waiting to meet a running toddler’s forehead.

The materials play a huge role too. We lean toward smooth-grained hardwoods like thermally modified ash or high-quality powder-coated steel. The coating is applied in a fluidized bed, which means it melts evenly and flows into all the microscopic crevices, so there are no burrs, splinters, or peeling paint flakes that could catch a kid’s skin or clothing. Even the drainage slots on the seat are punched and then deburred and polished. I’ve watched my own kids climb all over the prototypes in our workshop, and I wouldn’t have put them there if I didn’t trust the finishes completely.

What about the legs and the ground connection? That’s often overlooked. A bolted base plate can be a nasty trip hazard if the corners stick out. Our mounting feet are either completely recessed into the bench’s structure or have a flush, disk-shaped profile with a skirt that slopes gently down to the concrete. If a ball rolls under the bench and a kid dives after it, they won’t hit a sharp metal angle. The fasteners are countersunk and often capped with a smooth nylon plug that blends into the surface.

We also comply with the EN 1176 and ASTM F1487 standards that cover playground and public-use equipment, even though strict adherence isn’t always mandatory for a simple bench in all regions. But why take the risk? Those standards set specific limits on protrusions, entanglement, and crushing points, and we test our designs against them voluntarily. That includes a “head and neck entrapment” probe test for any openings, which means even the gaps between the backrest slats are either too small for a child to fit their fingers through or wide enough to avoid trapping a limb. No V-shaped openings that could catch a sleeve or a hood drawstring.

Now, I want to be transparent: a bench alone won’t make a playground 100% risk-free. Supervision and common sense still matter. But if you’re asking specifically whether the bench itself introduces an unnecessary hazard because of sharp metal corners or splintered wood, the answer is absolutely not. We’ve replaced enough old, splintery benches in community parks to know the difference. A safe bench invites parents to sit, chat, and keep an eye on their kids without constantly shouting “be careful of the corner!” That peace of mind is exactly why we build them the way we do.
