Some are practically magnets for tags and scratches, while others shrug off everything from permanent markers to angle grinders. That dense plastic doesn’t let paint bite in well; it sits on top and can often be wiped or removed with gentle solvent without leaving a stain. Metal benches — the classic cast iron or steel frames — have a different weakness. Bare or poorly painted metal rusts the moment a scratch breaks the paint film. A tiny tag engraving turns into an orange rusty scrawl within weeks when rain gets in. That’s why you rarely see raw metal anymore. Stainless steel is much better because it resists rust natively, but it’s expensive and still shows scratches if someone goes at it with a key or rock. Powder coating on metal benches does double duty here: it provides a coloured finish that’s harder than wet paint and can itself be formulated with some anti-graffiti properties, plus it seals the metal from moisture. Design plays a bigger role than most people realise. A bench with broad, blank flat surfaces practically invites big block letters. Designers now consciously break up surfaces with ribs, perforations, or deeply textured patterns. It’s not just aesthetics. Graffiti artists find it frustrating to paint a tag across slats with half-inch gaps or a dimpled pattern that scatters the spray. Anti-vandalism hardware is part of this too. Bolts that only tighten with special keys, concealed fixings, and solid legs embedded deeply in concrete make it tough for someone to disassemble or pry pieces apart. I’ve watched teenagers try to rock a poorly fixed bench and rip it from the ground; the newer models don’t even wiggle when you kick them. Skateboard deterrents are another parallel — those little metal nubs on edges don’t stop graffiti directly, but they stop grinding that can scar the surface and lead to deep gouges where paint can pool later.

A drunk with a permanent marker probably won’t leave a lasting mark on a coated, textured metal or plastic surface. A determined individual with a can of spray paint will always make some temporary visual mess, but on the right bench it’s a ten-minute maintenance job, not a permanent scar. The weakest link is always maintenance response. Even the best coating fails if the graffiti bakes on for three months.
