Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What's the lead time for a custom-colored street bench?

Honestly, when someone asks me about the lead time for a custom-colored street bench, I always say the same thing: it depends, but I’ll give you the real numbers so you can plan properly. I’ve been on both sides of this — as a buyer specifying furniture for a public plaza and later working closely with manufacturers — so I know the anxiety of waiting for that perfect shade to show up on site.

Let’s cut straight to it. For a standard street bench with a custom powder coat color, you’re typically looking at 4 to 6 weeks if the manufacturer already has the bench frames in stock and just needs to coat and assemble them. If the entire bench has to be fabricated from scratch — steel cutting, welding, grinding, then coating — the realistic lead time stretches to 8 to 10 weeks. Some high-end European workshops might quote you 10 to 12 weeks, especially during their summer shutdown or if you’re ordering a truly bespoke design with curved elements or timber slats stained to match a specific palette.

What actually eats up the time is the color matching and the painting queue. A professional supplier won’t just grab a rattle can; they’ll order polyester powder in your chosen RAL or Pantone reference, and if it’s a non-stock color, the powder supplier alone can take 5 to 7 business days to formulate and deliver. Then the factory needs to slot your job into their coating line. If they’re running a batch of black benches for a city contract, your three teal benches might wait until they have enough custom jobs to justify purging the booth and switching colors. That’s just how efficient production works, and it’s the number one reason custom lead times can bump from 4 weeks to 7 weeks seemingly overnight.

You can speed things up if you’re flexible. Ask the factory what stock colors they keep in their powder inventory — often they’ll have RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, RAL 9005 Jet Black, or RAL 6005 Moss Green already on hand. If any of those work for your project, you could get benches in as little as 2 to 3 weeks. I’ve also seen clients save three weeks by accepting a lightly textured finish instead of a glossy smooth one, simply because that powder was already in stock for another project.

There’s another hidden factor: the slats or seat material. A fully metal bench is faster to produce than a bench with FSC-certified hardwood slats that need to be cut, sanded, oiled or stained to your custom color, and then fitted. Wood adds anywhere from one to three extra weeks, especially if the timber needs to acclimate in the factory environment to avoid warping later.

Shipping and installation don’t count in the “factory” lead time, but I’ll mention them because they catch people out. If your benches are coming from a domestic workshop, truck transit might be just a few days. If they’re container-shipped from overseas, you’re adding 4 to 6 weeks of ocean freight and customs clearance on top of production, plus another week if the port is congested — and these days, you should just assume it might be. So a bench that takes 6 weeks to make could easily become a 12 to 14 week total timeline from order to arrival.

My practical advice is to always confirm whether the quoted lead time is “from order” or “from approved shop drawing and color sample.” I’ve seen projects go sideways because the client thought the clock started when they signed the quote, but the manufacturer only started counting after the submittal was approved. Get that in writing, and nail down who pays for delays if the powder color you picked is backordered.

In short, a custom-colored street bench is not an off-the-shelf item, and that’s a good thing — you’re getting exactly the identity your streetscape needs. Just give yourself a buffer by ordering early, locking in the RAL code upfront, and asking what’s actually in stock. If you do that, you’ll be sitting on that perfect green or terracotta bench before you know it.
