How do I keep a park bench from wobbling on uneven ground?

Honestly, there’s nothing more annoying than sitting down with a coffee on what looks like a gorgeous park bench, only to have it rock back and forth every time you breathe. I’ve dealt with this exact thing in my own backyard, and over at a little community garden where I volunteer. Uneven ground is just part of life—whether it’s from tree roots, worn-away soil, or a flagstone path that’s shifted over winter. But a wobbly bench doesn’t have to be your new normal. You just need a solid game plan, and I’ll walk you through exactly what works.

First, figure out which leg (or legs) is the troublemaker. Sit on the bench and gently shift your weight side to side. You’ll feel the high spot versus the low spot. Usually, it’s just one leg that’s not touching the ground fully, or two on one side if the whole bench is sitting on a slope. Once you’ve spotted the gap, you’ve got a few different ways to fix it, depending on how permanent you want the fix to be and what the ground is made of.

The quickest, no-tool method I’ve used more times than I can count is slipping a shim under the short leg. But please, skip the folded-up napkin. What actually stays put are heavy-duty rubber shims or composite plastic shims that don’t rot, split, or compress when it rains. You literally just tap one under the foot until the bench sits level, then snap off or score and break off the excess. If the bench is on soil, I sometimes push a thin, flat paver or a piece of pressure-treated wood under the entire leg side instead—just dig out a little soil so it sits flush, set it down, and compact it by stepping on it. The bench stays solid for months.

For a much cleaner, permanent fix, you want adjustable feet, or “leveling glides.” A lot of newer wooden or metal benches come with threaded holes in the legs where you can screw in a plastic or stainless steel foot that you simply turn until all four legs touch the ground evenly. If your bench doesn’t have them, you can retrofit it. I’ve installed heavy-duty T-nuts into the bottom of wooden bench legs—drill a hole the right size, hammer in the T-nut, then screw in an adjustable glide with a rubber base. On metal benches, sometimes you can find clip-on adjustable feet, or you can add a rubber crutch tip with a built-in screw thread after epoxying a bolt into the hollow leg. Sounds a bit involved, but it’s honestly a one-afternoon project that makes the bench feel brand new.

Now, if the bench is on soft ground like lawn or mulch, the problem often isn’t just the surface, it’s that over time the legs sink unevenly. My favorite fix there is to place 12”x12” concrete stepping stones or deck blocks directly under each leg, leveled into the ground. Dig a shallow bed for each stone, use a small line level or just a carpenter’s level across the tops, and make sure all four stones are perfectly flush with each other. Then set the bench on top. This distributes the weight, stops sinking, and honestly looks intentional—like the bench was always meant to be there. For added wobble-proofing, I place a thin rubber pad or a slice of rubber horse stall mat between the bench leg and the stone to absorb micro-movements.

One more low-effort trick if you’re on gravel or a hard-packed dirt path: dig down the offending leg slightly. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but if it’s one leg that’s resting higher than the others, you can carefully chip out the high spot until all four feet make contact. Go slowly with a trowel or a flat-head screwdriver, and check with your level often. Once it’s seated, spread the extra gravel around the base, and you’re done. No parts, no cost.

The key in all of this is using materials that hold up to weather. Wood shims eventually rot, plastic ones get brittle in the sun, and metal washers can rust and leave stains. Rubber, stainless steel, or high-density composite is the way to go. And once you’ve leveled that bench, give it a good shake—if it doesn’t budge, you’ve nailed it.
