Article title:I’m Worried About Theft—Do Your Street Benches Come With Anti-Theft Hardware?

Article content:It is hands-down the most common question people whisper to me at trade shows, and I always lean in and say the same thing: “I’d be worried too. Let me show you exactly what we do.”

I get it. You picture a quiet park at 2 a.m., a pickup truck, and a couple of guys with a wrench. Or maybe it’s a street corner where a bench just… vanishes over a weekend. It is not paranoia. It is experience. I have talked to enough landscape architects and facility managers who have literally budgeted for “bench replacement” as a recurring line item. That is ridiculous. A bench should be a one-time investment that outlasts its warranty by a decade.

So, yes, our street benches absolutely come with anti-theft hardware—and it is not an afterthought. It is baked into the engineering from the first sketch.

Let me walk you through the three layers that keep our benches where you put them.

Layer one is the visible deterrent: all the fasteners you can see are security-head bolts. We use a custom penta-drive pattern—not a standard hex, not a Phillips, not even a Torx. The average thief shows up with a socket set. They take one look at our bolt heads and realize they have nothing that fits. If they do go buy a penta socket online, they will still face the next two layers, which is where the magic actually happens.

Layer two is what I call the “shear-off and lock” system. During installation, each security bolt is torqued down until a deliberate shear neck snaps off, leaving a smooth, conical, spin-proof fastener head. There is nothing to grip. You cannot unscrew it with pliers, vice grips, or even a pipe wrench. I’ve watched maintenance guys try to remove one without the right demolition tool, and they just burn time and curse. That is exactly the point.

Layer three is the one nobody thinks about: the internal steel cabling. Every single one of our street bench slats has a ghost-thin, 7x19 strand aircraft-grade stainless steel cable running through the entire length of the wood or metal profile. Even if someone somehow cuts or smashes the visible structure, that cable still anchors the slat to the frame—and the frame is anchored to the ground. It turns what a thief imagines as a quick “grab and toss” into a noisy, time-consuming job that sets off every risk-reward alarm in their head. Most of them will just walk away and target a bench that was not built by people who care this much.

And the ground anchoring? That is a whole separate conversation, but you should know that our base plates are pre-drilled for both surface-mount wedge anchors and in-ground concrete embedment. We ship the bench with the anchoring hardware included. You don’t have to chase down a matching bolt spec at a hardware store. The anchors are 316 marine-grade stainless—because street salt, dog urine, and pressure washers will eat anything less alive in two seasons. We also include a placement template and a chemical anchoring option for substrates where mechanical expansion isn’t ideal. If your site is on a historic cobblestone plaza or a rooftop with a membrane, we’ll have a solution that doesn’t sacrifice security.

I also need to say something upfront about weight. A lot of companies will sell you a “theft-proof” bench that weighs 400 pounds and calls it a day. I don’t love that approach because a heavy bench is still movable with enough leverage and a dolly, and it’s a nightmare when you need to do legitimate maintenance or street cleaning. Our benches are deliberately designed to be installed by two people but uninstalled by nobody without a full demolition kit and a lot of patience. That’s the sweet spot. I want your grounds crew to actually like the furniture, not dread rearranging it for an event.

Here’s one thing I wish more people asked about: what happens after a vandalism attempt? Because in the real world, sometimes a thief with an angle grinder shows up at 3 a.m. No bench is 100% immune to a determined person with power tools—anyone who claims that is lying to you. What matters is the aftermath. Our design philosophy is that the bench should suffer cosmetic damage but remain structurally intact and anchored. We deliberately make the most vulnerable points easily replaceable: end caps, armrest brackets, and a couple of sacrificial plates that take the abuse. You can swap them in twenty minutes with the special driver we keep on file for your organization. The core frame? That thing will still be there, still be anchored, still be straight, and still be holding the weight of a sleeping teenager ten years from now.

I had a parks director in Edmonton tell me something that stuck. He said, “Your bench is the only one we haven’t fished out of the North Saskatchewan River.” I won’t pretend that is a technical specification, but it’s my favorite testimonial. It tells you what happens when street furniture stops being a soft target.

So if you are worried about theft, I’m genuinely glad you’re asking before you buy. Too many people only ask after a bench walks away. My advice: look past the catalog photos and ask suppliers about their shear-off bolts, their internal lanyard systems, and the exact grade of their anchoring stainless. If they blink, you already have your answer. We’ve got spec sheets, cutaway drawings, and a video of us trying and failing to pull a slat off a frame with a crowbar. I’ll happily send all of it.

Because honestly, you should not be lying awake wondering if your bench is still there. You’ve got bigger things to worry about. Let us worry about the bench.
