If you’re setting a park bench on sand or loose soil, the biggest mistake is relying on short stakes or simply burying the legs. Loose ground shifts with moisture, temperature changes, and weight, so shallow anchors tend to loosen, sink, or tilt over time. The best approach is to anchor deep enough to reach stable soil or spread the load wide enough to prevent sinking.
The best all-around method is helical ground screws, also called screw piles. These look like large steel screws and twist directly into the ground. In sand or loose soil, use a longer screw—usually 24 to 36 inches or more—so it bites into firmer soil below. Once the screw is installed, you bolt the park bench legs to the mounting plate. This method resists uplift, side-to-side movement, and sinking. It also requires less digging than concrete and can be removed or adjusted later if needed. If you go this route, choose galvanized or stainless steel hardware, especially near beaches or wet areas where corrosion is a concern.
If ground screws won’t work because the loose layer is very deep, the next best option is a concrete footing. Dig a hole roughly 12 to 18 inches wide and deep enough to get below the unstable soil, often 18 to 24 inches in sandy conditions. Pour concrete into the hole and set a post base or anchor bolt in the wet concrete. After it cures, attach the bench securely to the anchor. In very loose sand, make the bottom of the footing wider than the top or add a compacted gravel base beneath the concrete. This helps prevent the whole footing from sinking or tilting.
For a lighter-duty or semi-permanent bench, you can use precast concrete pads or large pavers. Dig a shallow trench, add and compact a 4 to 6 inch gravel base, level the pads, and anchor the bench legs with masonry anchors or heavy brackets. This spreads the bench’s weight over a larger area. It is not as strong as a deep footing, but it works well in many park settings where the sand is reasonably stable.
A few practical tips: Don’t just place bench legs into sand and backfill around them, because they will sink unevenly. Use wide anchor plates or leg brackets to increase bearing area. Dampen and compact sandy soil before taking measurements. In beach sand that shifts seasonally, use adjustable feet or leave a little room for settling. Always choose corrosion-resistant fasteners like stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized hardware.
If I had to choose one method for most sand or loose soil sites, I would choose helical ground screws first and concrete footings second. Helical screws are fast, clean, strong, and easier to adjust. Concrete footings are cheaper in materials but require more labor and curing time. Either option will keep the bench stable far longer than short stakes, sandbags, or shallow anchors.
