Great question—and one we get a lot from parks departments and campus planners. The honest answer is that an unsecured bench can blow over in extreme wind, but our street benches are designed to make that very unlikely when installed as recommended.
There are three main things working in the bench’s favor: mass, anchor points, and wind profile.
Mass first. Our standard commercial benches use heavy-gauge steel frames, cast iron legs, or thick recycled plastic lumber. A typical 6-foot bench weighs between 180 and 320 pounds depending on material. That alone resists gusty days, but weight isn’t a guarantee once winds get strong enough to catch the seat like a sail.
That’s where anchoring comes in. Every bench has pre-drilled holes or mounting feet that accept concrete wedge anchors, drop-in anchors, or through-bolts. When a bench is bolted to a concrete pad or footings, it effectively becomes part of the ground. We’ve had customers in coastal and high-plains areas report properly anchored benches staying put through 60–70 mph gusts and severe thunderstorm warnings.
If you can’t drill into the surface—say you’re placing benches on a rooftop deck, pavers, or a protected plaza—we recommend using surface-mount base plates or ballast kits. These add low-profile weight and spread the load without breaking the waterproofing. They aren’t a substitute for anchors in hurricane zones, but they make sliding and tipping much less likely.
The key is installation. A bench that’s simply set in place on smooth pavement is at risk, especially if it has a solid backrest that catches wind. But if you choose a heavier model, anchor the feet, and check the hardware once or twice a year, your benches should handle strong winds without becoming projectiles.
