Great question—this is one of the first things parents and park managers ask when they look at our benches. On our standard park benches, the maximum gap between slats is 1/2 inch (about 13 mm). Most boards are set between 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch depending on the material and expected moisture movement. That spacing is tight enough to prevent a child’s leg from slipping through or getting wedged, while still allowing rainwater to drain and the boards to expand and contract without cracking.
To put it in perspective, a toddler’s leg—even at the narrowest point around the ankle—is much thicker than a 1/2-inch slot. A leg cannot drop into a gap that small. The more common concern with slatted benches is finger pinching, and a 1/2-inch or smaller gap doesn’t create the wider pinch-and-twist space that larger gaps can. We also round the edges and recess the fasteners to reduce pinch points.
For any larger openings, such as gaps in armrests or backrest details, we stay out of the 3.5-inch to 9-inch range that can create head or body entrapment hazards. For leg-specific safety, the rule is simple: we keep gaps at or below 1/2 inch, or we make openings large enough for a limb to pass through completely—never in between.
