Great question—and one we hear a lot from customers in Arizona, Texas, and Southern California. The short answer is no, our outdoor benches do not crack or visibly expand in extreme heat, but let me explain why that is.
All materials move a little when temperatures climb. That is normal thermal expansion. The key is how the bench is designed. We use high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, lumber for most of our bench seating. It is a dense, UV-stabilized material that absorbs far less heat movement than wood or PVC. Even when surface temperatures reach 120 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, the HDPE expands only a tiny amount. We engineer for that movement from the start with slotted screw holes, small expansion gaps between boards, and frames that allow the material to breathe. So you do not see buckling, warping, or popped fasteners.
Cracking is even less of a concern. Wood cracks in heat because it dries out and loses moisture. HDPE does not rely on moisture content, so it will not split or splinter in dry heat. Our aluminum frames are powder-coated to handle high heat and UV exposure, and the coating will not peel or blister under normal sun exposure. We have tested benches in desert climates for years, and the biggest change you will notice is that the surface feels hot to the touch, just like any outdoor surface. A light-colored finish or a cushion can help with that.
That said, no outdoor product is completely frozen in place. If you measured with a caliper on a 110 degree day versus a 60 degree morning, you might see a tiny difference. But it is not something your eye will catch, and it will not damage the bench.
So if you live somewhere with extreme heat, choose a bench built with HDPE or aluminum rather than untreated wood. Look for UV-stabilized materials and proper expansion gaps. Our benches are designed for exactly that. Let me know if you would like specific temperature test data.
