Great question—and you’re right to be cautious, because splintering is one of the most common failures in outdoor furniture. In most cases, it happens when cheap or improperly dried wood goes through repeated cycles of wetting and drying. The surface fibers swell when they absorb moisture, then shrink as the bench dries in the sun. Over time those fibers lift, check, and break off as splinters. Add sharp edges and untreated end grain, and the problem accelerates fast.
Here’s how we design our benches to avoid that.
We start with the material. Soft, open-pored woods like pine or fir are naturally prone to splintering because their grain is loose and their fibers separate easily. We avoid those for outdoor seating. Instead we use dense, weather-resistant options such as teak, cedar, white oak, or thermally modified ash. For customers who want an even lower-maintenance option, we offer all-weather poly lumber, which can’t splinter the way wood does because it has no grain.
Next is drying. All of our solid wood is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before it’s machined. This step is easy for factories to skip because it adds time and cost, but it’s one of the most important things we do. Kiln-dried wood is less likely to cup, twist, or form surface cracks as it adjusts to your local climate.
We also pay attention to how each board is cut. Quarter-sawn and vertical-grain boards move less across their width than flat-sawn boards. Less movement means fewer raised fibers and a smoother surface season after season. Where we do use flat-sawn wood, we select boards with tight, straight grain and remove any section with knots or irregular grain near the seating surface.
After cutting, every slat and edge goes through a multi-stage sanding process. We round over the corners and soften the end grain, because that’s where most splinters start. A sharp 90-degree edge might look crisp on day one, but it’s exactly the spot that catches clothing and skin later.
Then there’s sealing. We treat the surface—especially the end grain—with a penetrating oil or UV-stable finish. Unlike a thick film finish that can peel and take wood fibers with it, a penetrating finish soaks into the surface and slows moisture absorption from the inside out. End grain is particularly thirsty, so we seal it carefully at the factory and recommend resealing it once a year.
The structure matters too. We pre-drill fasteners, use stainless steel hardware, and leave small gaps between slats so water doesn’t pool. Pooling water forces itself into the grain, swells the fibers, and then dries unevenly—that cycle is exactly what creates splinters. We also allow for normal expansion and contraction in the frame so the boards don’t fight each other as the temperature and humidity change.
That said, no wood bench is completely zero-maintenance. To keep the surface smooth for years, wash it with mild soap and water a couple of times a year, and reapply a penetrating oil or sealer annually or whenever the wood starts to look dry. If you ever notice a small rough spot, lightly sand it with fine-grit paper and reseal that area before it becomes a splinter.
So yes, many outdoor benches do splinter over time—but it’s not something you have to accept. When a bench is made from stable material, dried properly, sanded thoroughly, and sealed on the end grain, it can stay smooth and splinter-free on bare skin for years. That’s the standard we build to.
