Are your urban benches resistant to termites and other wood-boring insects?

Short answer: yes, our urban benches are designed to resist termites and other wood-boring insects, but I want to be honest about what “resistant” means. No outdoor wood product is 100% termite-proof forever, especially in high-pressure areas. What we do is combine materials, treatment, and design so pests have very little opportunity to establish themselves.

As a manufacturer of commercial street furniture, we know public seating takes far more abuse than residential patio furniture. That’s why we start with the right wood. Our premium benches use dense, naturally durable hardwoods such as iroko, thermally modified ash, or FSC-certified teak. These species have tight grain, natural oils, and lower moisture absorption, which makes them much less attractive to termites and powderpost beetles. In our standard range, we use kiln-dried pine that is pressure-treated with an insecticide and fungicide approved for outdoor use. Kiln drying is important because it drops the moisture content to a level where wood-boring beetle larvae struggle to survive.

Treatment is the second layer. Every wooden slat is cut, routed, and sealed on all six sides before assembly. End grain gets extra attention because that is where moisture enters and where insects often start. We apply a penetrating oil or water-based wood preservative with insect-repellent properties. This treatment soaks into the fibers rather than just sitting on the surface, so it doesn’t peel off like a film finish.

Design also plays a bigger role than most people expect. Our benches are built with metal bases—usually hot-dip galvanized steel or cast aluminum—so wood never sits directly on soil or paving. Subterranean termites need moisture and a hidden path from the ground into the wood. By lifting the wood and using stainless steel fixings, we remove that easy bridge. We also use open slat spacing to promote airflow. Dry wood is simply less inviting to wood-boring insects.

That said, let me be straight: if a site has active, aggressive termite pressure, no wood-only bench deserves an unconditional “proof” claim. That’s why we offer upgrades for high-risk zones. Thermally modified wood changes the cell structure so it contains less digestible material, and our composite or mineral-based slats contain no organic food source for insects at all. These options are especially popular in coastal or subtropical areas where termites are relentless.

Maintenance is realistic. A quick seasonal inspection is enough. Check for mud tubes on legs, fine sawdust under the bench, or tiny exit holes in the slats. Keep soil, mulch, and wet leaves away from the base. If a slat ever shows damage, our benches are designed for component replacement. You swap the slat, not the whole bench, which keeps long-term costs down.

So, are our urban benches resistant to termites and other wood-boring insects? Yes—through durable species selection, pressure treatment, six-sided sealing, metal bases, and open-air design. We won’t call them absolutely insect-proof, because that would be dishonest. But if you need a well-engineered bench that dramatically reduces pest risk and is easy to maintain in public spaces, they are a dependable choice.
