Great question, and one we hear often from landscape architects and facility managers. We offer both smooth and textured seat options on our street benches, but if you are choosing a bench for a public sidewalk, park, transit stop, or any spot exposed to rain and morning dew, we almost always recommend a textured bench seat.
The reason is simple: safety. A textured or lightly grooved surface creates friction between the sitter and the bench. On wet or frosty mornings, smooth metal, painted wood, or polished concrete can become surprisingly slick. A small amount of texture—whether it is a fine sand-like finish, shallow grooves, or a wood-grain profile—gives shoes and clothing something to grip. That helps prevent the sliding-off feeling you get on a slippery flat seat.
That said, smooth seats still have their place. They are easy to clean, they suit certain modern architectural styles, and they can feel cooler in hot weather if the material is right. For indoor or fully covered locations, smooth is often fine. If a client requests smooth outdoor seating, we usually add a clear anti-slip coating or specify a naturally grippy material like brushed aluminum, textured powder coating, or lightly ribbed plastic lumber.
We also consider material. Recycled plastic and powder-coated steel can be molded or finished with texture without making the bench uncomfortable. Fine textures are better than deep ridges because they improve grip but do not trap water or make the seat hard to clean. Wood benches naturally have a subtle grain, but we still recommend spacing the slats and using a non-gloss sealant to reduce slipperiness.
So to answer directly: our standard street benches come with a textured bench seat to help prevent sliding off, but smooth is available on request. If you are unsure, think about where the bench will live. Outdoor, uncovered, or high-traffic? Go textured. Covered, architectural, or low-moisture? Smooth can work beautifully. And if you need a true anti-slip bench seat for a steep slope or exposed waterfront, we can supply a slightly coarser finish without turning the seat into sandpaper.
