Your HOA is asking the right question. Old wooden park benches in full sun usually split, crack, fade, and need annual staining or sealing, so switching to a more durable material makes sense. But “durable” in direct sun is a little different from “durable” in a shady spot. You need something that will not break down under UV, will not get dangerously hot, and will not need constant maintenance.
Here is how I would rank the best materials for a bench that faces direct sun all day.
1. Recycled plastic lumber, or HDPE, is my top all-around pick. This is the material I would recommend first for most HOAs. Recycled plastic benches are made from high-density polyethylene, usually with UV-stabilized color mixed all the way through the material. They will not rot, splinter, crack, or need painting. Direct sun will cause some fading over many years, but quality brands hold their color much better than wood or cheap composite. They are heavy, so they stay put and resist theft. The only real downside is heat: dark recycled plastic can get warm in direct sun, but it is usually less brutal than metal. Choose light tan, gray, or white slats for sunny areas.
2. Powder-coated aluminum is best for a lighter, maintenance-free frame. Aluminum will not rust, which matters if your benches get irrigation overspray or rain between hot spells. A good powder coat protects the metal from UV and gives you color options. Light powder-coated aluminum reflects more heat and stays far cooler than dark steel. The catch is that aluminum conducts heat, so the surface can still get hot under direct sun, especially if you pick black or dark bronze. If you go this route, specify a light color and look for seating surfaces that are perforated or slatted so air can circulate.
3. Thermoplastic-coated steel is toughest if vandalism is a concern. This is the type used in many municipal parks. The steel frame is strong, and the thick thermoplastic coating handles sun, rain, and abuse well. It can get hot in full sun, so again, light colors help. Scratches should be touched up to protect the steel underneath, but overall it is a 15-to-20-year product.
4. Capped composite wood is best if you want the wood look. Composite boards blend wood fiber and plastic. Cheap composites can fade or develop mold in humid climates, but higher-end capped composites have a protective outer layer that resists UV and moisture better. They still look more like wood than recycled plastic. If the HOA insists on a wood appearance, capped composite with a good warranty is the smarter choice.
5. Tropical hardwoods like ipe or teak are nice, but not low-maintenance. These woods are naturally dense and can last a long time, but direct sun will turn them silvery gray unless the HOA keeps up with oiling or staining. That is usually the maintenance headache your HOA is trying to avoid.
If I had one vote, I would go with recycled plastic slats on a powder-coated aluminum or galvanized steel frame. That combination gives you UV resistance, no splinters or rot, and a frame that will not rust. If you want a single-material bench, all-recycled plastic is the simplest long-term answer. Ask suppliers for UV-stabilized colors, stainless steel hardware, and a warranty of at least 10 years on the finish and structure.
One quick heat tip: color matters almost as much as material. A light gray or sand bench will be noticeably cooler to touch than dark green or black in afternoon sun. If your park has full sun and no shade trees yet, that choice alone can make the benches much more usable.
