Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How heavy is a typical concrete outdoor bench, and can two people move it?

A typical concrete outdoor bench usually weighs somewhere between 250 and 500 pounds, with most standard 5- to 6-foot benches landing around 350–450 pounds. Small 4-foot styles can be as light as 150–250 pounds, while heavier reinforced or decorative pieces can easily top 600–800 pounds. So if you’re looking at a normal backyard bench, I’d plan for roughly 400 pounds as a safe estimate.

Can two people move it? The honest answer is: sometimes, but it depends on the bench, the distance, and your moving setup. Two reasonably strong adults can often lift and shuffle a 300–400 pound concrete bench a short distance on flat ground, but this is not a casual carry. Concrete is dense, awkwardly shaped, and has no good handles. If the bench is over about 500 pounds, or if you need to go up steps, through a gate, or across grass, I’d strongly recommend three to four people or a heavy-duty dolly.

If you do try it with two people, lift with your legs, keep the bench close to your body, and tilt one end at a time rather than dead-lifting the whole thing. Better yet, use a furniture dolly, hand truck, or shoulder straps. Set the bench on its side or back on the dolly, strap it down, and roll it. For short moves across a patio, two people can usually slide a bench on plywood or moving blankets, but avoid dragging it directly on rough concrete if you want to prevent chipping.

My rule of thumb: up to about 300 pounds, two people can handle it if they’re careful. Between 300 and 500 pounds, two people may be able to move it with a dolly or for a very short lift, but three people is smarter. Over 500 pounds, use equipment or call for extra hands. Also check whether the bench has removable legs or backrests; taking those off can reduce weight and make it much easier to carry.

So yes, two people can often move a typical concrete outdoor bench, but it’s heavy enough that you should treat it seriously. When in doubt, add another person or use a dolly. Your back will thank you, and the bench is less likely to get dropped or cracked.
