Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Are your urban benches easy to clean if birds make a mess on them?

Yes—and honestly, this is one of the first questions we hear from parks departments and property managers. Birds happen. The design goal is to make sure a messy pigeon or sparrow doesn’t leave a permanent stain or turn park bench maintenance into a long scrub session.

We choose materials that make urban benches easy to clean. Porous materials like untreated wood or rough concrete soak up droppings and moisture. Instead, our frames use powder-coated aluminum or steel, and the seat slats are high-density polyethylene or thermally modified wood with sealed edges. These surfaces are non-porous or tightly sealed, so droppings sit on top instead of soaking in. The baked-on powder coating creates a hard shell that resists staining and handles repeated washing without dulling.

Shape matters just as much. Our seats have a slight slope or small drainage gaps between slats, so rain can wash away light mess before it bakes on. We also avoid deep grooves, exposed bolts, and unnecessary joints where bird droppings can collect. Fewer hiding spots means less scrubbing.

Many models also receive an anti-stain bench coating. It will not make a bench bird-proof, but it stops acidic droppings from etching the finish when you clean within a day or two. UV-stable pigments help the color stay even after repeated washing and sun exposure.

For bird droppings bench cleaning, simple is best. Warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap and a soft brush or sponge usually does the job. Since bird droppings are acidic, wipe them off as soon as you can. If a mess has dried, lay a wet cloth over the spot for a few minutes, then wipe it away. Avoid wire brushes, strong solvents, and high-pressure washers, because they can wear down the coating. In most cases, five minutes with a bucket brings the bench back to looking new.

If you manage a space with heavy bird pressure—near waterfronts, food courts, or nesting trees—choose darker or speckled colorways to hide small stains between cleanings, and plan a quick weekly rinse during peak season. It is not about making the bench stain-proof. It is about making cleanup so simple that staff actually do it. That is what makes low-maintenance outdoor benches work in the real world.

So yes, our urban benches are easy to clean when birds make a mess. We design them to turn bird droppings into a five-minute nuisance, not a permanent problem.
