Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Can these street benches handle snow plows bumping into them during winter?

Honestly, the short answer is: most standard street benches are not designed to take a direct hit from a snow plow. But that doesn’t mean every bench gets wrecked every winter. It really comes down to what the bench is made of, how it’s installed, and how your city manages snow removal around public seating.

Think about what a snow plow actually does when it bumps into something at low speed. A plastic or lightweight aluminum bench will often crack, bend, or get shoved out of its footing. Even a concrete bench can chip or shift if the plow blade catches an edge. The real problem isn’t just the impact itself — it’s the combination of frozen ground, heavy plow weight, and repeated bumps over several storms.

So which benches survive? Heavy duty outdoor benches made from thick ductile iron, solid steel, or reinforced concrete with deep anchored footings tend to fare better. Some municipalities actually install removable benches in winter or place them on raised concrete pads behind curbs specifically to keep them out of the plow’s path. Others mark bench locations with tall reflective poles so plow drivers can avoid them even under snow cover.

If you’re asking because you’re choosing a bench for a snowy area, look for models labeled “snow plow resistant” or “winter rated.” Those usually have rounded edges, no exposed fasteners, and mounting systems that allow some flex rather than snapping. You can also install bollards or a low protective curb in front of the bench to take the hit instead.

From what I’ve seen in colder cities, the most common approach is simply to accept that street benches are seasonal furniture. Many towns remove them before the first big snowfall and reinstall them in spring. That’s cheaper and safer than constantly repairing plow damage.

Bottom line: if a snow plow hits a typical street bench head-on, the bench probably won’t win. But with the right material, smart placement, and a little winter planning, you can definitely reduce the risk and keep your public seating in one piece until spring.
