High-density polyethylene with UV stabilizers does surprisingly well. It doesn’t get as hot as metal, and it won’t crack like wood. The smartest desert cities are moving toward hybrid designs: powder-coated aluminum slats, light-colored composite planks, or metal benches with perforated seats that allow airflow. Some use solar-reflective coatings that lower surface temperature by 20–30°F. Others simply install shade structures, because even the best bench material can’t beat direct desert sun forever.
