If your bench keeps getting moved—or worse, stolen—anchoring it to concrete is the right fix. I’ve done this on patios, sidewalks, and commercial storefronts, and the method I trust most is a wedge anchor installed with a hammer drill. Here’s exactly how to do it.
First, check the bench. Most metal benches have mounting holes in the feet or base plates. If yours does not, drill holes through the metal feet with a metal drill bit. For wooden benches, use galvanized steel L-brackets or flat straps screwed into the legs, then anchor the brackets to the concrete.
The strongest and most common method is using wedge anchors. They are cheap, reliable, and once tightened, the wedge expands inside the concrete so the bench cannot simply be lifted or slid away.
Tools and materials you need:
- Hammer drill
- Masonry drill bit sized to your anchor, usually 3/8 inch for a 3/8 inch wedge anchor
- Wedge anchors, stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized for outdoor use
- Washers and nuts, usually included with the anchors
- Socket wrench or impact driver
- Vacuum, blower, or compressed air
- Marker or pencil
- Safety glasses and hearing protection
Step by step:
1. Place the bench exactly where you want it. Use a marker or pencil to mark the mounting holes through the feet onto the concrete.
2. Move the bench away. Drill each marked hole with the hammer drill and masonry bit. Drill to the required depth, usually the anchor embedment depth plus a little extra so dust does not bottom out the anchor. Check the anchor package for exact depth.
3. Clean the holes thoroughly. Blow out the dust with a vacuum, blower, or compressed air. Do not skip this, because leftover dust can reduce holding strength.
4. Place the bench back over the holes. Insert a wedge anchor through each bench foot and into the hole. Thread the nut and washer onto the anchor just enough to keep it in place.
5. Tighten each nut with a socket wrench or impact driver. As you tighten, the wedge is pulled up and expands against the sides of the concrete hole. Stop once the bench foot is snug against the concrete. Do not overtighten, or you can crack the concrete or strip the anchor.
If you may need to remove the bench later, sleeve anchors are a good alternative. They work similarly but are a bit easier to remove than wedge anchors. However, for permanent outdoor security, wedge anchors are better.
If the concrete is old, cracked, or wet, use epoxy anchors. Drill the hole, clean it very well, inject epoxy anchoring adhesive, insert a threaded rod, let it cure, then place the bench over the rods and tighten nuts. Epoxy anchors have extremely high pull-out strength and work well in damaged concrete.
To make the bench harder to steal, upgrade the fasteners. Replace standard nuts with shear nuts or tamper-resistant security nuts that require special tools. You can also add one-way security screws or use bolt caps over the anchors. A threadlocker on the threads adds extra vibration resistance, but the real security comes from the concrete anchor itself.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Using zinc-plated anchors outdoors. They rust and weaken. Use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized anchors.
- Not cleaning the drilled holes. This is the number one reason anchors fail.
- Drilling too close to the edge of the concrete. Keep the hole at least five anchor diameters away from any edge to avoid cracking.
- Overtightening the anchor. Tighten until the bench is firmly seated, then stop.
If you are drilling into a structural slab or suspect utilities or post-tension cables, call 811 before drilling. For a normal patio slab, this is usually not necessary, but it is better to be safe.
Check the anchors once a year. If a bench becomes loose, tighten the nuts slightly. If a bolt head is damaged or rusted, replace it immediately.
This is a straightforward weekend project. With the right anchors and a hammer drill, you can have that bench locked down solid in under an hour, and it will be far less likely to be moved or stolen.
