Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What’s the best way to clean bird droppings off a street bench without damaging the finish?

Honestly, the safest approach is to soften the mess first. Soak a couple of paper towels or a microfiber cloth in warm water, lay it over the droppings, and let it sit for 5–10 minutes. That rehydrates the dried crust so you’re not scraping hard. Once it’s soft, gently lift it off with a plastic scraper or an old gift card—never a metal putty knife or steel wool, which can scratch the finish. Then wash the spot with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap using a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse the area well with clean water and dry it with a towel so water doesn’t sit on the finish. If you’re worried about germs, mix one part white vinegar with three parts water, spray it on, let it sit for about one minute, and wipe dry. Always test on a hidden area first, especially if the bench is painted or has a clear coat. Avoid bleach, harsh degreasers, and pressure washers—they tend to dull or strip the finish. For a wooden bench, after cleaning and drying, apply a thin coat of outdoor wood protectant if the finish looks thirsty.
