Good question—and the short answer is: it depends on the material. Freezing temperatures alone don’t usually destroy a well-made outdoor bench, but the freeze-thaw cycle can, especially if the material absorbs water.

Poly lumber / HDPE (recycled plastic)
This is the best choice if you’re worried about cracking in cold weather. High-density polyethylene doesn’t absorb water, so there’s nothing inside it to freeze, expand, and split. It can become slightly stiffer in extreme cold, but it won’t crack like wood or concrete. Most quality poly benches are rated for temperatures well below zero.
Wood
Wood is a mixed bag. Dense hardwoods like teak, ipe, or eucalyptus are naturally oily and dense, so they resist water absorption. They can survive freezing winters, but they may develop small surface checks or hairline cracks over time, especially if left wet. Softwoods or cheaper woods like pine are far more likely to crack because they soak up water, and that water expands when it freezes. If you have a wooden bench, keeping it sealed or covered helps a lot.
