Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What’s the spacing between slats on your urban benches—could a small child’s head get stuck?

Hi there—great question. On our standard urban benches, the clear gap between slats is 18–20 mm (about 0.7–0.8 inches). That’s deliberately far smaller than the range where head entrapment becomes a hazard; public safety guidelines commonly flag openings between about 89 mm and 229 mm (3.5–9 inches) as risky for small children. Because our spacing sits well below that lower threshold, a small child’s head cannot pass through or get stuck between the slats.

We also keep the spacing consistent along the full seat and use rounded edges to minimize pinch points. Where a custom urban bench design needs different drainage or aesthetic details, we only adjust the gaps within safe, code-compliant limits. So for standard installations, no—the slat spacing on our urban benches is not a head entrapment risk.
