Most wooden outdoor benches need a fresh protective coat every 6 to 12 months, but the exact timing depends on your climate, wood type, and the finish you use. A good rule of thumb is to do a simple water test every few months: sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If the water beads up, your protection is still working. If it soaks in and darkens the wood, it's time to recoat. In sunny, dry climates, UV rays break down clear sealers faster, so you may need to reapply every 6 months. In rainy or snowy areas, moisture and freeze-thaw cycles wear down the finish just as quickly, so a spring and fall application often works best. If your bench sits under a covered porch or in heavy shade, you can usually stretch it to once a year. The type of product matters too. Oil-based penetrating sealers tend to last longer and protect from within, while water-based acrylic coatings form a surface film that may need more frequent touch-ups. Before applying any new coat, clean the bench with a wood cleaner or mild soap and water, let it dry completely, and lightly sand any rough spots. For a long-lasting routine, apply one coat in spring after the last frost and another in fall before winter weather arrives. If you use a tinted stain or paint, you can often go 2 to 3 years between full refinishes, but touch up worn areas as soon as you see bare wood. Skipping too long between coats leads to cracking, gray discoloration, and rot, so set a reminder twice a year to check your bench and reapply protection whenever the water test fails.
