Start by cleaning the bench thoroughly. Dirt, bird droppings, pollen, and moisture are what age a stored bench fastest. Use mild soap and water for most materials. If the bench has wooden slats, let them dry completely before storage—trapped moisture is the main cause of warping and mildew. For metal frames, check for scratches or rust spots and touch them up with paint or a rust inhibitor.
Next, choose the right spot. A dry, ventilated garage, shed, or covered storage area is ideal. If you have to store it outside, keep it in a shaded, well-drained area, never directly on soil or grass. Elevate the bench on pallets, bricks, or blocks so air can circulate underneath. That prevents moisture from wicking up into wood or metal.
Cover it the right way. Use a breathable cover, canvas drop cloth, or a purpose-made outdoor furniture cover. Avoid wrapping it tightly in plastic sheeting, because trapped condensation will cause rust and mildew. If you use a tarp, leave the bottom open or add spacers so some air moves through.
Material matters. Wood benefits from a fresh coat of oil, sealer, or wood preservative before storage, and it should be stored flat or evenly supported to avoid warping.
