Great question—and honestly, the answer is a bit of both. Urban benches are no longer automatically made from virgin lumber. In many cities, especially in North America and Europe, there has been a strong shift toward recycled materials, particularly recycled plastic lumber and composite mixes made from post-consumer plastic bags, milk jugs, and even recycled wood fiber. That said, virgin lumber is still widely used, especially when landscape architects want a natural wood aesthetic or when budgets and local sourcing favor traditional timber.
Why the shift toward recycled materials? Durability is the big one. Recycled plastic benches don’t rot, splinter, or get attacked by insects. They resist graffiti, clean up easily, and can handle heavy public use without needing to be repainted or resealed every year. Cities love that because maintenance budgets are tight. They also come with a strong sustainability story: they divert plastic waste from landfills and reduce demand for new timber.
However, recycled benches aren’t perfect. They can fade over time, get hot in direct sun, and some people feel they look less warm or natural than wood. In very cold climates, they can become brittle, though modern formulations have improved a lot.
Virgin lumber benches, on the other hand, are often chosen for their beauty and feel. Hardwoods like teak, ipe, oak, or black locust are common for high-end public spaces. Softwoods like pine or cedar are sometimes used but need more treatment. The key issue with virgin lumber is sourcing. If the wood is not certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or a similar body, it may come from unsustainable or illegal logging. Responsibly harvested wood can be a renewable resource, but it usually requires more maintenance—sanding, sealing, replacing damaged slats—than recycled plastic.
So how do you tell what a particular bench is made from? Recycled plastic lumber often has a slightly uniform, grainy texture that looks a little too consistent. It may have visible specks of color or a matte, plastic-like surface. Tap it and it sounds dense and solid, not hollow. Virgin wood will show real grain variation, knots, and weathering. If you see end grain, real wood has growth rings; recycled plastic often has a homogeneous cross-section or an internal honeycomb structure. Check for labels too. Many manufacturers now stamp their benches with recycled content percentages or certifications like FSC, SFI, or Cradle to Cradle.
Some benches are hybrids: recycled plastic frames with wood-look finishes, or wood-plastic composite slats that blend recycled content with natural fiber. These can offer a middle ground—warm appearance with lower maintenance.
If you’re specifying or buying an urban bench, my practical advice is this: choose recycled plastic or composite when durability, low maintenance, and waste diversion are top priorities. Choose FSC-certified hardwood if the project demands a natural look and there is a maintenance plan in place. Avoid unspecified virgin lumber, because without certification you can’t be sure the forest source is managed responsibly.
The overall trend is clearly toward more recycled content in street furniture. Many cities now require a minimum percentage of post-consumer recycled material in public benches, and manufacturers have responded with better colors, textures, and structural designs. So while virgin lumber is still common, it is no longer the default. The default is shifting to materials that close the loop—and that’s good news for both public spaces and the planet.
