Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How much does it cost to ship a single outdoor bench across the country?

If you have ever tried to buy or sell a single outdoor bench on Facebook Marketplace or Etsy, you already know the hardest part isn’t the bench itself — it’s getting the thing from point A to point B without spending more on freight than you did on the furniture. So how much does it actually cost to ship one outdoor bench across the country? The honest answer is that most people pay somewhere between $180 and $650, but depending on weight, distance, packing, and whether you need liftgate service, the number can swing from under $100 to over $1,000. Let me break it down the way a friend would, not a freight broker.

Start with the two factors that matter the most: weight and dimensions. A typical wooden or metal outdoor bench weighs 40 to 90 pounds. Once you add a pallet, cardboard, stretch wrap, and maybe a few corner protectors, you are looking at a shipping weight of 60 to 120 pounds. If the bench is 4 to 6 feet long and you keep the packed height under 30 inches, most carriers will treat it as a small LTL (less-than-truckload) shipment. In freight terms, that usually falls into freight class 100 or 110. If the bench is unusually fragile, has glass, or is oddly shaped, the class can jump to 150 or 200 and your price will jump with it.

For a basic 70-pound packaged bench moving from New York to Los Angeles, FedEx Freight or UPS Freight might quote you $220 to $380 for standard 3-to-5-day transit without liftgate. Add residential delivery — because yes, a home address costs more than a business dock — and you are often in the $300 to $450 range. If you need liftgate service because there is no forklift at either end, add another $60 to $110. If you need the driver to call 30 minutes before arrival, some carriers add $15 to $35. None of this is hidden; it just gets added fast.

Now here is where people save real money. Gray-hair shipping veterans rarely use FedEx or UPS for a single bench. They go to third-party LTL brokers like uShip, FreightCenter, TSI, or Freightquote. You list the bench as "1 pallet, 48x24x24 inches, 80 lbs, class 100, residential pickup and delivery." Brokers often get you rates from regional carriers like Estes, Old Dominion, SAIA, or R+L for $160 to $300 on the same route. I have personally seen a 65-pound teak bench go from Texas to Ohio for $178 through a broker when UPS wanted $412. The catch is you need to be patient, compare at least four quotes, and be accurate with your measurements. If you guess a lower weight and the carrier re-weighs it, you will get a nasty adjustment bill.

Can you ship a bench even cheaper? Sometimes, yes, but it depends on timing and flexibility. If you can wait two to four weeks, peer-to-peer shipping services like Roadie or uShip's marketplace sometimes have someone already driving that route with extra space. I have shipped a 50-pound bench from Denver to Chicago for $95 that way. The risk is higher — no guaranteed pickup date, less cargo insurance, and you need to wrap it like it will ride through a storm. For most people, the sweet spot between safety and price is a broker-negotiated LTL shipment with one pallet and no liftgate if you can load it yourself or meet the driver at a local terminal.

Factor in packing costs too. A sturdy wooden pallet is $15 to $30 if you can't find a free one behind a store. Stretch wrap, cardboard, and edge protectors run $10 to $20. If you pay a packaging store to crate it, expect $60 to $120 extra. Guys who ship benches often remove the legs if possible, wrap each part in moving blankets, and then stretch wrap the whole bundle to a pallet. This drops the cubic size and sometimes the freight class, which saves $30 to $80.

So the realistic answer for one outdoor bench going coast to coast is $200 to $450 for a properly palletized LTL shipment through a broker, including residential pickup and delivery but not liftgate. If you need white-glove service or the bench is over 150 pounds packed, budget $500 to $800. If you find a $95 peer-to-peer ride, take it, but don't expect that every day. The keys are accurate weight, a small pallet footprint, freight class 100, and at least three quotes. Do that and you won't get soaked on shipping.
