Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I need urban benches that are wheelchair accessible—do you have models with extra space on the ends?

Absolutely—yes, we do carry several urban bench models designed specifically with wheelchair accessibility in mind, including options that provide extra space on the ends. That open end zone is a smart feature because it lets a wheelchair user pull alongside the bench and transfer laterally without having to navigate around armrests or a solid side panel. What you’re describing is often called an “accessible end bay” or “transfer space” bench.

In our current lineup, look for models labeled as ADA-compliant or “barrier-free.” These typically have one or both ends left open, with no armrest or backrest obstruction for at least the last 30 to 36 inches of the bench length. Some designs extend that clear space even further—up to 48 inches—so a wheelchair can sit fully parallel to the seating surface. A few popular options include:

- The ClearEnd Series: available in 6-foot and 8-foot lengths, with a completely open last section on both ends. Powder-coated steel frame, recycled plastic slats, and a weight capacity of 750 lbs.

- The Transfer Bay Bench: one end features a lowered transfer rail and a 42-inch clear space; the other end is standard. Great for mixed-use plazas.

- The Side-Access Armrest Bench: this model keeps a center armrest for older adults who need push-off support, but removes the outer armrests entirely and broadens the end seat area to 36 inches.

If you’re working with a landscape architect or specifying for a public park, I’d recommend confirming your local accessibility code. In the U.S., the ADA doesn’t require every bench to be accessible, but when benches are provided, at least a portion should meet accessible design guidelines—and the extra end space is one of the easiest ways to achieve that. We can also customize almost any of our metal or wood benches to have an open end on one or both sides, often with no additional lead time if you catch the order before fabrication.

Send me the approximate bench length you need, the number of accessible ends, and your material preference (steel, recycled plastic, or wood). I’ll pull the exact model numbers and current lead times for you. If you want, I can also share a short spec sheet with dimensioned drawings showing the wheelchair transfer zone.
