Honestly, the answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. For most custom urban bench orders I’ve been involved with, the typical delivery time falls between four and eight weeks after final design approval. If the design is more complex or the order is large, ten to twelve weeks is realistic. Some big streetscape projects can push into the twelve-to-sixteen-week range, especially when custom castings, lighting, or specialty hardwood are involved.
Let me break that down so you can plan around it.
Once you approve the shop drawings, the clock really starts. Most manufacturers spend the first three to seven days locking in material specs, hardware, and finish samples. Then material procurement takes one to three weeks, depending on whether the steel, aluminum, or FSC-certified hardwood is in stock. The actual fabrication—cutting, bending, welding, grinding—usually takes another two to five weeks for a standard run of benches. After that, surface finishing like powder coating, priming, or galvanizing adds three to seven days, including curing and quality checks. Packaging and freight typically take another two to seven days depending on your location.
So a normal single bench or a small run of five to ten units? Four to six weeks is common. A larger order of fifty or more benches? Expect six to eight weeks at minimum, often more.
The biggest variables are design complexity, material availability, quantity, and finishing. A simple welded steel bench with a standard black powder coat will ship faster than a curved bench with laser-cut panels, custom wood slats, and a custom RAL color. Hardwoods like thermally modified ash or ipe can add lead time because they may need to be ordered from specialty suppliers. Stainless steel and weathering steel can also have longer mill lead times, especially in peak construction season.
If you’re working against a deadline, my advice is to lock the design early and get drawings approved fast. Ask the manufacturer which materials and finishes are currently in stock, and consider using a standard frame with custom accents rather than a fully bespoke structure. Also leave a one-to-two-week buffer for freight and installation scheduling. That buffer saves a lot of headaches.
To keep it simple: plan for eight weeks as a safe middle ground. If you have a hard deadline for a park opening, streetscape project, or campus installation, start the conversation at least twelve weeks out. That gives you room for design revisions, finish samples, and shipping without panic.
