I get this question a lot, and the short answer is that most of our outdoor benches are designed to hold roughly 400–500 pounds of evenly distributed static weight without structural failure. But “wobbly” is a different thing. In real-world use, a bench can start to feel shaky well before you hit its maximum load—usually if the weight is concentrated in one spot, if people shift or rock, or if the fasteners have loosened over time.
A typical two-seat wooden or metal bench will feel solid with two or three adults sitting normally. That’s often in the 300–450 pound range. Once you get past that, especially if someone sits hard on an armrest or two people sit on the backrest, you may notice movement. That movement is usually not the wood or metal failing; it’s the joints flexing or bolts losing tension. On uneven ground, even less weight can cause a bench to rock, which feels like wobble.
The material matters too. Powder-coated steel frames tend to stay rigid longer than wood, but they can still develop wobble at connection points. Teak and acacia benches have great strength, but natural expansion and contraction can loosen screws over time. If a bench is assembled but never re-tightened, wobble can appear at lower weights simply because the hardware has backed off.
So my practical answer is: expect solid everyday use up to about 350–450 pounds on one of our standard outdoor benches, provided it’s on a flat surface and the bolts are snug. If you plan to seat heavier loads, look for a bench with a reinforced steel frame, center support legs, or a higher stated weight capacity. And if your bench starts to wobble, don’t assume it’s overloaded—tighten the hardware first, add leveling feet if needed, and check for cracked or warped boards.
That approach usually restores the bench to feeling rock solid. If you need a specific model’s rating, I’d check the product specs because some of our heavy-duty designs are rated for 600–800 pounds while compact accent benches may be rated for 250–300 pounds.
