If you're comparing concrete and metal park benches for durability, you're asking the right question, but “durable” can mean different things depending on where the bench will live.
Start with the biggest difference: how each material fails. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension. A well-cast, properly reinforced concrete bench can sit outside for decades, but if water gets into tiny cracks and freezes, it can spall, crack, or chip. Once the internal steel rebar starts rusting, you get ugly rust stains and structural cracking. Concrete is also heavy enough that theft is rare, and it shrugs off rot, insects, and fire. In the right conditions, I'd expect a good precast concrete bench to last 30–50 years with almost no routine maintenance.
Metal is more of a mixed bag because “metal” can mean cast iron, steel, stainless steel, or aluminum. Cast iron is heavy and strong but brittle; a sharp impact can crack it. Steel is tough, but rust is the main issue. A quality powder-coated galvanized steel bench can be very durable, often 20–40 years outdoors if scratches are touched up. Aluminum won't rust and is lighter, but it's softer and more likely to dent or get scratched. In coastal salt air, aluminum can still corrode unless it's anodized or powder-coated. Stainless steel is excellent but expensive and still needs occasional cleaning to avoid tea staining.
For real-world park use, I'd compare these specific things:
1. Climate. Freeze-thaw cycles punish concrete, while salt air or road salt punishes steel. In a cold, wet climate, look for air-entrained concrete or high-quality coated steel. In coastal areas, lean toward aluminum or stainless steel.
2. Vandalism and theft. Concrete is hard to steal and hard to seriously damage without heavy tools. Its mass is a security feature. Metal can be scratched, bent, or cut, but it's often easier to paint, weld, or repair after vandalism.
3. Maintenance. Metal benches usually need periodic inspection for rust, scratches, loose bolts, and recoating every few years in harsh environments. Concrete usually only needs occasional cleaning or sealing if you want to reduce staining and moisture absorption.
4. Repairability. Metal is easier to repair: you can weld, replace slats, sand, and repaint. Concrete repair is possible but rarely looks seamless, and damaged corners can expose rebar and worsen quickly if not patched.
5. Comfort and safety. Both get hot in direct sun and cold in winter. Metal heats and cools faster, which can make it feel more extreme. Concrete stays more thermally stable but can feel rough if not finished well.
A practical way to compare before buying is to check the specs. For concrete, ask whether it's reinforced, what PSI rating it has, whether it's air-entrained for freeze-thaw resistance, and how it's sealed. For metal, ask about the metal type, gauge or thickness, whether it's galvanized, and what coating system is used. A cheap painted steel bench can look great for a year and then rust at every joint. A heavy galvanized and powder-coated steel bench is a different animal.
So which is more durable? If I were equipping a public park in a cold, wet, high-vandalism area and didn't want to think about maintenance, I'd choose a thick precast concrete bench with good drainage details and a sealed finish. If I wanted durability with easier installation, more design flexibility, and better repairability, I'd choose a galvanized and powder-coated steel bench, or powder-coated aluminum in coastal areas. Either way, avoid thin painted steel and unreinforced or poorly cured concrete. That choice will matter more than the material category itself.
