How do the different materials for outdoor benches—like steel, aluminum, or cast iron—compare in heat retention?

If you have ever sat on a metal bench in full summer sun, you already know the burn is real. But not all metals behave the same way. The three most common materials for outdoor benches—steel, aluminum, and cast iron—all get hot, yet they retain and release that heat very differently. The short version? Cast iron is the worst offender for long-lasting heat, steel comes in a close second, and aluminum cools down the fastest. But the full story involves thermal mass, conductivity, and how each bench is built.

Cast iron is dense and heavy. That high density gives it a large thermal mass, meaning it can absorb a lot of heat energy before its temperature stops climbing. Once hot, cast iron holds onto that heat stubbornly. On a 90°F day, an unshaded cast iron bench can easily reach 140°F to 160°F on the surface, and it will stay painfully hot well after the sun goes down. Its high thermal conductivity also means it transfers that heat to your skin almost instantly, which is why it feels like touching a skillet.

Steel is also dense and conductive, but most outdoor steel benches are made from thinner tubing or perforated sheet metal. That reduces overall mass compared to a solid cast iron slab. A steel bench will still get very hot—often 120°F to 150°F in direct sun—but because there is less material per square inch, it releases heat slightly faster once shade arrives or air temperature drops. However, a thick solid steel plate bench can behave almost exactly like cast iron.

Aluminum is the lightest of the three. It has excellent thermal conductivity, so it heats up quickly on the surface, but its low density and low thermal mass mean it cannot store much heat. An aluminum bench in full sun might reach 110°F to 130°F, but the moment a cloud passes or a breeze picks up, it cools down dramatically. This makes aluminum the most comfortable metal choice for sunny locations, especially if the bench has a powder-coated finish or slatted design that limits direct skin contact.

There is one important caveat: finish color matters as much as material. A black aluminum bench can feel hotter than a light gray steel bench because dark colors absorb more solar radiation. But given the same color and sun exposure, the ranking is consistent: cast iron retains the most heat, steel is next, and aluminum retains the least.

So what should you choose for a patio, park, or garden? If the bench will sit in full afternoon sun and you live in a warm climate, aluminum with a light powder coat is your best friend. If you love the classic look of cast iron, place it under a tree or add a wooden seat pad—or simply accept that you will only sit on it in the morning. Steel offers a middle ground: strong, affordable, and slightly more forgiving than cast iron, but still capable of a serious burn on a hot day.

When comparing heat retention, think of it this way: cast iron is a brick oven, steel is a cast-iron skillet, and aluminum is a thin baking sheet. All get hot, but only one cools down before you finish your lemonade.
