Honestly, putting together an urban bench yourself is totally doable if you keep the design simple. I'd break the tool list into must-haves and nice-to-haves. First, grab a cordless drill/driver. You'll use it for pilot holes and driving screws, so pair it with a decent bit set: twist bits for wood, a countersink bit if you want flush screws, and a couple of driver bits. If you're buying lumber off the shelf, you can often have it cut at the store, but for a clean fit at home, a circular saw is the most versatile. A speed square and a 25-foot tape measure are non-negotiable for marking straight lines and consistent lengths. Add a 24-inch level so your bench doesn't slope toward the sidewalk. For assembly, clamps are your extra set of hands. A couple of bar clamps or quick-grip clamps keep boards aligned while you fasten them. A random orbital sander or simple sanding block saves your clothes and skin from splinters. If you're using carriage bolts or lag screws, include a socket wrench set or adjustable wrench. Wood glue is optional but helps stiffen joints. And don't skip safety gear: safety glasses, ear protection if you're sawing, and a dust mask when sanding or cutting treated lumber. If you want a more industrial urban look with metal legs or brackets, an angle grinder or hacksaw can help trim metal, but for most first-time builders, wood with pre-made metal legs only requires the basics. My honest advice: start with a drill, circular saw, measuring tools, clamps, and a sander. You can always add more specialized tools later once you know what kind of benches you actually enjoy building.
