Honestly, it depends on where the bench came from and what it’s made of. Most standard park benches sold for public or commercial use do not come with a dedicated anti-graffiti coating straight from the factory. They might have a basic powder coat, paint, or wood stain, but those finishes are for weather protection and looks, not for easy graffiti removal. If you are buying a bench marketed specifically as “anti-graffiti” or “vandal-resistant,” then yes, it usually has a sacrificial or non-stick coating already applied. But those are the exception, not the rule. For a typical urban bench you pick up from a hardware store or a standard street furniture supplier, you will likely need to seal it yourself if you want strong graffiti protection. The good news is that sealing is not complicated. You can use a clear, permanent anti-graffiti coating made for metal, wood, or concrete. Look for a product described as a “sacrificial” coating if you want to wash off graffiti with hot water and then reapply, or a “permanent” coating if you want to use stronger chemical removers without damaging the base finish. Before you seal, clean the bench thoroughly, let it dry, and apply the coating in thin, even layers. For wood benches, a penetrating sealer combined with a graffiti barrier works best because wood is porous. For metal benches, a two-part polyurethane or silicone-based anti-graffiti clear coat will make spray paint wipe off much easier. If you are not sure whether your bench already has a coating, do a small water test: spray or pour a little water on the surface. If it beads up tightly and runs off without darkening the material, there is probably some kind of sealer or coating already present. If the water soaks in or spreads flat, the bench is unprotected and you should seal it. Also check the manufacturer’s spec sheet or ask the supplier directly. In many cases, even a bench with a standard powder coat can still be sealed over with an anti-graffiti product, but you must clean it well first and make sure the new coating is compatible with the existing finish. My advice: if you care about keeping a public or outdoor bench clean from tags and stickers, plan to apply your own anti-graffiti sealer. It is a half-day job for most bench sizes and costs far less than repeatedly repainting or scrubbing with harsh chemicals. And remember, no coating makes graffiti removal completely effortless, but a good sealer turns a frustrating cleanup into a quick wipe-down.
