Most urban benches designed for comfortable sitting have a seat depth between 16 and 20 inches, with 18 inches being the most common sweet spot for average adults. This range allows your thighs to stay fully supported without the front edge digging into the back of your knees. If the depth is too short—say under 15 inches—you feel like you are perching on a ledge and your legs tire quickly. If it is too deep, over 22 inches, shorter users often have to slouch forward or let their feet dangle, which strains the lower back over time. Many city park benches follow the 18-inch standard because it works well for a wide variety of body heights and sitting postures. Some modern designs with a slight backrest angle may push the depth to 20 inches to encourage a more relaxed, reclined position. For benches without backrests, a depth of 16 to 17 inches is often preferred so people can sit facing either direction without feeling unstable. In high-traffic urban areas where people sit briefly, you might see shallower depths around 15 to 16 inches to discourage sleeping and keep foot traffic moving, but those are not truly comfortable for long periods. For genuine comfort on a public bench, look for a seat depth of at least 17 inches, with 18 to 19 inches being the ideal target for most adults. If you are designing or choosing a bench for mixed public use, stick with an 18-inch seat depth and pair it with a seat height of 17 to 18 inches—that combination tends to satisfy the widest range of users.
