That is exactly the right question to ask before buying any wooden park bench. The short answer is yes—our benches are sanded smooth, and splinters are something we design against from the start.
We begin with kiln-dried hardwood, which is less likely to warp or raise sharp grain than green or low-grade softwood. After cutting and joinery, every board goes through a multi-stage sanding process. We start with coarse grits to remove saw marks and rough spots, then move through medium grits, and finish with fine sanding on all seating surfaces, armrests, and edges. The exact final grit depends on the wood species, but for most benches we finish at 220 grit or higher on areas that touch skin.
We also round over edges and soften corners, because most splinters start at sharp edges rather than flat surfaces. After sanding, we apply a weather-resistant sealant, and then we do something that makes a real difference: we sand lightly again after the first coat. This knocks down any grain that lifts when the wood meets moisture or finish, leaving a surface that feels smooth to the touch rather than fuzzy.
In our workshop, we physically run a cloth and hand over every bench before packing. If a bench does not pass the bare hand test, it does not ship. That is not a marketing line—it is just the fastest way to catch a rough spot before it becomes your problem.
For long-term care, wood is a natural material. Weather, UV, and temperature changes can cause small checks or raised grain over time, especially on benches installed outdoors year-round. We include simple care instructions: clean the surface occasionally, check edges after harsh winters, and if you ever feel a rough spot, a light pass with fine sandpaper and a fresh coat of sealer will restore the smooth finish. Most customers never need to do this, but it is good to know the bench can be maintained rather than replaced.
