Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Do your street benches come with a guarantee against cracking in cold weather?

Great question — and one we hear a lot from customers in northern climates, mountain towns, and anywhere temperatures regularly drop below freezing. The short answer is yes: our street benches are backed by a written guarantee that specifically covers cracking caused by cold weather. But let me explain exactly what that means, so there’s no fine print surprise later.

First, every bench we sell — from the basic steel-slat models to the premium recycled plastic and powder-coated aluminum lines — goes through thermal shock testing before it ever ships. We cycle the materials between -40°F and 140°F multiple times, looking for micro-fractures, delamination, or surface crazing. If a material can’t handle that swing, we don’t build with it. That’s step one.

Step two is the guarantee itself. For our standard steel and aluminum benches, the cold-weather cracking guarantee runs for 10 years from the date of purchase. This covers the seat slats, backrests, end frames, and any welded joints. If a crack develops as a direct result of freezing temperatures, thermal expansion, or frost heave acting on the bench, we’ll send replacement parts or a full replacement bench at no charge — and we cover the shipping too. For our recycled plastic benches (made from HDPE or similar), the guarantee extends to 15 years, because that material is naturally more flexible in extreme cold and less prone to brittle fracture.

One thing to be clear about: the guarantee does not cover cracks caused by physical impact, vandalism, or improper installation. If someone hits the bench with a snowplow blade, that’s not a cold-weather crack — that’s a vehicle collision. Same goes for mounting the bench on an uneven concrete pad that shifts and twists the frame. We ask that you follow our included installation guide, which specifies expansion gaps and anchoring methods for freeze-thaw zones.

We also offer an optional “Arctic Package” for extreme environments like Fairbanks, Reykjavik, or high-altitude ski resorts. This package uses a special low-temperature polymer blend in the slats and a thicker gauge steel frame with extra weld reinforcement. It’s rated to -60°F continuous exposure, and the cracking guarantee extends to 20 years. It costs about 15% more than the standard bench, but for customers who have dealt with cheap benches shattering after two winters, it’s worth every penny.

So in plain English: yes, our street benches come with a guarantee against cold-weather cracking. We put it in writing, we test for it aggressively, and we stand behind it. If you’re dealing with a specific municipality or architect who needs the guarantee language for a spec sheet, just email us and we’ll send the full warranty document — no sign-up gimmick, just the PDF.

And if you’re not sure which bench is right for your climate zone, tell me your lowest winter temperature and whether you get heavy snow load. I’ll point you toward the model that won’t let you down when the ice sets in.
