Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

We’re designing a small plaza—what sizes do your urban benches come in?

Great question — this is one of the first things we walk through when someone is designing a small plaza. Most urban benches we offer come in four standard lengths: 4 ft, 5 ft, 6 ft, and 8 ft. Width and height are fairly consistent across the range, but length is the dimension that shapes how many people can sit comfortably and how the bench fits into your plaza.

For a small plaza, I usually recommend sticking with 4 ft, 5 ft, and 6 ft benches. A 4 ft bench seats two adults comfortably and is easy to tuck along a planter edge or a narrow walkway. A 5 ft bench is a nice middle option that seats two adults with a little breathing room or two adults and a child. A 6 ft bench is the classic “three-person” length and still feels proportionate in most compact public spaces. An 8 ft bench can work, but in a small plaza it tends to become a visual anchor, so I’d use it sparingly — maybe one long bench along a main wall or as a focal seat under a tree.

Beyond length, the other numbers to know are seat depth, seat height, and back height. Most urban benches have a seat depth of 18 to 20 inches, which gives enough support without making people feel swallowed. Seat height usually runs 17 to 19 inches from the ground, which works for the widest range of users. If the bench has a backrest, the top of the back is typically 30 to 36 inches from the ground. Armrests are optional but worth considering if you want to make the seating more accessible for older adults or people with mobility issues.

Placement matters as much as size. In a small plaza, I’d keep at least 36 inches of clear space in front of a bench for pedestrian flow, and 48 inches if the plaza is on an accessible route or you expect wheelchairs to pass. Leave about 6 to 10 feet between benches so the seating areas feel connected but not crowded. A mix of one 6 ft bench and two 4 ft benches is often more flexible than one large row.

If your plaza has an unusual footprint, many manufacturers offer custom lengths and modular systems. You can also choose backless benches, which visually take up less space, or benches with built-in planters and tables. But if you’re working with a standard product line, the safest small-plaza palette is 4 ft, 5 ft, and 6 ft lengths with an 18 to 20 inch seat depth and a 17 to 19 inch seat height. That range gives you enough variety to create intimate seating clusters without overwhelming the space.
